Abatement is any set of measures designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Abatement work that is not conducted by a Certified Lead Abatement Worker under the supervision of a certified Lead Supervisor is subject to heavy fines by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or Authorized State lead enforcement bodies.
This course is offered in-person, and provides the necessary training for workers who will be involved with lead abatement projects. Certified abatement firms must have certified Lead Abatement Workers on site who have completed lead abatement training & certification from an approved provider, and have registered and been approved by the EPA or Authorized State. Contractors performing abatement work must have at least one EPA or state certified Lead Abatement Supervisor directing the work, with the assistance of certified Lead Abatement Workers if required.
Training concludes with the required Lead Worker course certification exam.
This course is provided by an accredited trainer that is approved by the necessary EPA and/or Authorized-State lead program, as required based on the course location.
It is the participant's responsibility to verify that the course they attend will be accepted in any other state(s) where you will be performing work, and to process any required paperwork that may be necessary.
How do I become a certified Lead Abatement Worker?
- Complete a lead abatement worker certification course that is approved for the state in which the lead work will be performed.
- Submit the necessary paperwork to the EPA or Authorized State program with the appropriate fees.

EPA controls the lead-based paint program for abatement, inspection, and risk assessment activities in the following jurisdictions: Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming; American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Marianas and Tribal Lands.
All other states have EPA-authorized lead-based paint programs.
Please verify that the course you register for will be accepted in the state(s) where you wish to work, and be informed of any local registration, examination, or paperwork requirements.
